Major Bengaluru Power Outages on January 10 and 11

Bengaluru residents and businesses will face significant power disruptions on January 10 and 11 as the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) undertakes essential maintenance work. These power outages, coordinated by the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM), will affect various residential and industrial areas across the city, as part of the utility’s efforts to improve infrastructure and ensure more reliable electricity supply in the long run.

On January 10, the scheduled power cut will run from 10 am to 3:30 pm, impacting a number of critical residential and commercial areas in Bengaluru. These include Ravindra Nagar, Prashanth Nagar, Santosh Nagar, Air Force Jalahalli West, Vaishnavi Nakashtra Apartments, and the KSRTC Bus Stand, among others. The shutdown will also affect several key industrial zones such as Gati Road, Triveni, HHV, DMG, Krishna Fabrications, and Gemini Industries. Key establishments like the Wipro Wellcast Factory, Volvo, Avery Dennison, and Hitachi Industries will also experience power outages, which may disrupt production schedules and services.

The second round of power cuts will occur on January 11, with a slightly longer duration, from 10 am to 5 pm. Affected areas include prominent residential neighbourhoods such as Indiranagar (1st and 2nd stages), HAL 2nd Stage, Old Madras Road, and CV Raman Nagar, alongside important city landmarks like the Sri M Visvesvaraya Terminal at Bengaluru Railway Station, M.G. Road, and Cambridge Layout. These power outages are expected to cause inconvenience to the residents and businesses, particularly during the peak hours of the afternoon.

While the power disruptions may cause short-term inconvenience to the citizens, it is important to understand that such maintenance work is essential for the long-term sustainability of the city’s energy infrastructure. Power outages like these are a necessary measure to carry out upgrades, replace aging equipment, and ensure the transmission grid remains resilient in the face of growing demand. Bengaluru, like many rapidly growing urban centres, faces increasing pressure on its electricity distribution network, and regular maintenance helps avert larger issues down the line. KPTCL and BESCOM have assured the public that the maintenance work is being carried out with minimal disruption to daily activities, but residents and businesses must plan accordingly to manage these temporary outages.

From a broader sustainability perspective, these power cuts also present an opportunity for the city to examine its energy consumption and the role of energy efficiency in mitigating the impact of such disruptions. Bengaluru, known for its technological prowess and innovation, can lead the way in adopting renewable energy sources and smart grid technologies to reduce dependency on conventional power sources. In the long term, enhancing the efficiency of the city’s energy infrastructure, improving energy storage systems, and increasing the adoption of solar and wind power could help reduce the frequency and duration of power outages, while also aligning with the city’s sustainability goals.

For now, Bengaluru residents are advised to take note of the affected areas and timings, prepare for the outage, and look out for any further updates from BESCOM. As the city continues to modernise its infrastructure, these temporary disruptions serve as reminders of the ongoing need for investment in sustainable energy systems to meet future demand.
