Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway has entered a critical phase of environmental assessment, with planning documents indicating that the greenfield corridor would traverse ecologically sensitive landscapes, including protected forest areas and the Dahanu Eco-Sensitive Area. The proposal has renewed debate over balancing strategic freight infrastructure with long-term ecological conservation in one of western India’s environmentally significant regions. Submitted for environmental appraisal, the proposed 106-kilometre access-controlled highway would require approximately 1,715 hectares of land, including more than 200 hectares classified as forest land. The alignment also includes tunnel sections designed to navigate difficult terrain while connecting the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway near Kasa with the Samruddhi Expressway close to Igatpuri, creating a direct logistics corridor between the western coast and Maharashtra’s interior.
Planning documents indicate that the Vadhavan Expressway would pass through multiple villages located within environmentally sensitive zones. Several settlements fall under the draft Western Ghats eco-sensitive notification, while another lies within the notified Dahanu Eco-Sensitive Area. The alignment also passes through forested landscapes in the Jawhar-Mokhada belt and is located close to the eco-sensitive zone surrounding Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary, increasing the complexity of environmental evaluation. According to project submissions, multiple route alternatives were examined before selecting the current alignment. Officials involved in the planning process have argued that the preferred corridor offers better geometric design, minimises dependence on existing highways and supports uninterrupted freight movement between the proposed deep-sea port and inland industrial corridors. Improved logistics connectivity is also expected to strengthen manufacturing supply chains, encourage industrial investment and enhance regional economic competitiveness across Palghar and Nashik districts.
However, environmental planners caution that infrastructure projects crossing biodiversity-rich landscapes require rigorous ecological assessment beyond engineering considerations. Experts note that forest fragmentation, habitat connectivity, watershed protection and long-term impacts on wildlife movement must be carefully evaluated before construction approvals are granted. They also point out that Geographic Information System mapping and detailed forest verification remain ongoing, while the likely extent of tree loss has yet to be publicly disclosed. Conservation groups have also questioned whether the proposal aligns with existing environmental safeguards applicable to the Dahanu Eco-Sensitive Area, highlighting the need for transparent statutory clearances and meaningful consultation with affected communities. Environmental governance specialists argue that infrastructure of this scale should incorporate comprehensive biodiversity management plans, ecological restoration strategies and climate resilience measures from the earliest stages of project design.
