Maharashtra’s rain alert has been extended to six districts, with the weather department warning of rainfall in Kolhapur, Sindhudurg, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Washim and Yavatmal until Wednesday. The warning follows the intensification of Cyclone Murasu over the Bay of Bengal and heavy rain along the southern coast.
The cyclone intensified on Monday after forming over the Bay of Bengal and was expected to move towards the northwest, according to the report. It was likely to cross the coast near Nellore and Narsapur in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday. The system has also affected rainfall patterns in Maharashtra, where several parts of the state recorded rain during the previous 24 hours.
The warning covers districts across western, eastern and central Maharashtra. Kolhapur and Sindhudurg are in the state’s Konkan and western belt, while Chandrapur and Gadchiroli are in Vidarbha. Washim and Yavatmal are also in the Vidarbha region. The alert indicates that rainfall could affect local travel, roads and other infrastructure in the identified districts.
Pune district also recorded heavy rain in some areas. Indapur received 131 mm of rain in the 24 hours covered by the report, the highest total recorded in the state during that period. Baramati recorded 77.2 mm, while Shivajinagar in Pune recorded 41 mm.
Pimpri-Chinchwad recorded 19 mm of rain during the same period. The rainfall in Pune and its surrounding urban areas comes as the district continues to experience rain across several locations. The reported totals indicate significant variation within the district, with rural and urban areas registering different levels of rainfall.
The weather department’s warning remains in force for the six named districts until Wednesday. The cyclone was expected to continue moving northwest after crossing the Andhra Pradesh coast, while rainfall activity in Maharashtra was being monitored in connection with the system.
