Maharashtra Maps Sustainable Samruddhi Interchange Development
The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has initiated the next phase of planning for the 701-kilometre Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg by seeking a specialised consultant to prepare Geographic Information System (GIS)-based development plans for areas surrounding more than 20 interchanges. The initiative signals a shift from transport infrastructure delivery towards long-term spatial planning intended to guide sustainable urban and economic growth along one of India’s most significant expressway corridors. The proposed consultancy will develop detailed GIS base maps, undertake Existing Land Use (ELU) surveys and prepare integrated development plans for influence zones surrounding the expressway’s interchanges. By establishing a comprehensive spatial database before large-scale development accelerates, authorities aim to reduce unplanned urban expansion and improve coordination between transport infrastructure, land use and public services.
The Samruddhi Expressway GIS development initiative reflects a growing recognition that major transport corridors increasingly shape patterns of industrial investment, logistics, housing and commercial activity. Urban planners have frequently cautioned that without structured planning frameworks, expressway-led growth can contribute to fragmented settlements, pressure on agricultural land and infrastructure deficits. Officials expect the GIS-based planning exercise to identify existing environmental assets, settlement patterns, transportation networks and future growth opportunities across the corridor. The resulting development framework is expected to support informed decision-making on infrastructure investment, zoning regulations, utility planning and economic clusters while helping local authorities manage future urbanisation more effectively. The tender issued by MSRDC outlines a multi-stage planning process, with consultants required to prepare digital mapping and land-use assessments before developing planning proposals for interchange influence areas. A pre-bid meeting has been scheduled for 12 August 2026 at the corporation’s headquarters in Mumbai, while online bids will be accepted until 15 September 2026. An Earnest Money Deposit of ₹10 lakh has been prescribed under the tender conditions.
The Samruddhi Expressway GIS development programme is expected to complement the state’s broader objective of transforming the Nagpur-Mumbai corridor into an integrated economic belt linking manufacturing centres, logistics hubs, agricultural markets and emerging urban settlements. Rather than viewing the expressway solely as a transport project, the planning exercise acknowledges its potential to influence regional development over the coming decades. Experts in regional planning note that GIS-based spatial planning enables authorities to evaluate environmental constraints, flood-prone areas, ecological corridors and infrastructure capacity before approving new development. Such data-driven planning can improve climate resilience, protect natural landscapes and encourage more efficient land utilisation, particularly in rapidly developing regions.
As investment interest grows along the Samruddhi corridor, the effectiveness of future development will depend not only on transport connectivity but also on coordinated governance, environmental safeguards and integrated planning. The latest consultancy marks an early step towards establishing a structured framework capable of balancing economic opportunity with sustainable land management and resilient urban growth across Maharashtra’s largest expressway corridor.
