Maharashtra Harnesses Drones for Coastal Security
In a landmark initiative, Maharashtra is set to launch a drone-based surveillance system for coastal monitoring on 9th January. This forward-thinking approach aims to address illegal fishing practices and strengthen the enforcement of the Marine Fishing Regulation (Amendment) Act, 2021. By leveraging advanced drone technology, the programme seeks to streamline vessel regulation, ensure maritime security, and uphold the livelihoods of traditional fishing communities.
The state government has leased nine drones for deployment across seven coastal districts, covering Maharashtra’s extensive 720-kilometre coastline. Strategic allocations include two drones each for Raigad and Ratnagiri, and one drone for Palghar, Thane, Mumbai Suburban, Mumbai City, and Sindhudurg. A dedicated control room, established at the Commissioner of Fisheries’ office, will oversee operations and facilitate real-time coordination. Drones are expected to address challenges previously encountered with traditional patrol boats. The swift manoeuvrability of drones, combined with real-time mapping capabilities, will close existing enforcement gaps. Notably, they will enable the capture of actionable evidence against unauthorised fishing vessels, bolstering the implementation of the Marine Fishing Regulation Act.
Designed to protect coastal ecosystems and traditional fishing communities, the surveillance system aims to curb illegal activities by migrant operators in Maharashtra’s waters. With drones capable of patrolling up to 12 nautical miles, this initiative signifies a major shift in coastal management practices. Preparatory demonstrations were conducted across key locations, including Palghar, Thane, Mumbai Suburban, Mumbai City, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. The trials highlighted the efficiency of drones in monitoring vast coastal stretches and capturing detailed data for enforcement. Additionally, the programme fosters collaboration between the state’s fisheries department and the Marine Police Department. Real-time video feeds will enhance evidence collection, making enforcement more robust. This modernised approach not only secures the coastline but also safeguards Maharashtra’s invaluable marine resources.
