The central government has officially sanctioned the detailed project report (DPR) from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for the construction of an elevated corridor at the problematic Thuvariman-Melakkal junction in Madurai. This strategic infrastructure initiative, valued at ₹46.06 crore, aims to address the severe accident risks associated with this notorious black spot on the Dindigul-Kanyakumari Highway.
For years, the Thuvariman-Melakkal junction has been a source of concern for local residents, particularly due to frequent accidents, which are especially prevalent during the night. Reports suggest that the junction witnesses at least one or two accidents each month. In light of this persistent danger, residents have also advocated for the construction of an additional bridge at Samayanallur, which faces similar hazards.
Madurai’s Member of Parliament (MP) has expressed gratitude towards the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways for endorsing the project. In a recent tweet, the MP commended the government’s decision, highlighting that the need for the corridor was underscored during discussions with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari in October 2023. Although the project experienced delays owing to land acquisition challenges, these have now been resolved, paving the way for its advancement. The MP elaborated in a media statement, “The project faced delays earlier due to issues with land acquisition. However, the minister’s assurance has ensured that the project will proceed. While the Samayanallur black spot falls outside my constituency, I remain hopeful that it will be addressed given its similar risk profile.”
An NHAI senior official has confirmed that the tendering process for the project will commence shortly. The elevated corridor, extending approximately 700 meters, will incorporate an underpass near the junction, situated roughly 15 km from the Kappalur toll plaza. Additionally, the project will feature a service road and will be executed under the toll-operate-transfer (TOT) model, reflecting a significant move towards improving road safety and traffic management in the region.
