Lucknow to build rotary near Gomti Bridge to reduce traffic jams

The Rs 7,710 crore Green Corridor project in Lucknow has entered a crucial phase with the announcement of a major traffic infrastructure development near Gomti Bridge. In a bid to untangle vehicular congestion at one of the city’s most vital intersections, the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) is now moving ahead with plans to build a rotary between Sankalp Vatika and Shiksha Bhawan.

The proposed development aims to address long-standing traffic bottlenecks that plague commuters moving between Hazratganj, Nishatganj, Mahanagar, and other adjoining neighbourhoods. At present, road users navigating from the 1090 crossing to Polytechnic or towards the LDA office via the Gomti Bridge are forced to diverge awkwardly at Samtamulk intersection, causing confusion and slowdowns. Similarly, traffic approaching from Hazratganj via Sikandar Bagh en route to Mahanagar or Nishatganj tends to pile up after crossing the bridge, leading to delays and safety hazards. The proposed rotary is being introduced as part of Phase 2 of the Green Corridor and is intended as a ground-level roundabout rather than a conventional flyover. This decision stems from the desire to maintain the visual and spatial integrity of the area while enhancing road functionality through intelligent design.
As traffic volumes rise in sync with the city’s expanding urban footprint, the LDA is also undertaking widening works along the critical Hanuman Setu to Gomti Bridge stretch. The 10-metre-wide carriageway will be expanded to 18 metres to accommodate the growing traffic demand. These developments fall under the Rs 500 crore allocation for Phase 2, which is currently under implementation. Several structures, including a vital bridge connecting Bhaisa Kund Road to Laxman Mela Ground, are already under construction.
The Green Corridor initiative, which spans four phases, has been envisioned to transform urban mobility across Lucknow by easing congestion and improving environmental sustainability. Phase 1, covering the IIM Road to Pakka Pul stretch, has already been completed. Phase 2 is currently underway and is expected to conclude by late 2025. The upcoming phases will connect Pipraghat to Shaheed Path and eventually reach Kisan Path, creating a seamless mobility loop around the city. This effort is part of a broader urban renewal plan aligned with goals of reducing carbon emissions and building climate-resilient infrastructure.
According to officials overseeing the project, the rotary near Sankalp Vatika will offer immediate relief to daily commuters who experience traffic snarls during peak hours. Its strategic placement between two high-traffic arteries will regulate vehicle movement, reduce waiting times, and improve fuel efficiency. More importantly, it signals a shift in how Lucknow is approaching traffic planning—not just through brute-force road expansion but by creating systems that accommodate volume through thoughtful design.
As cities across India confront the twin challenges of rapid urbanisation and climate change, Lucknow’s Green Corridor serves as a case study in responsive infrastructure development. It champions not only smoother transport but also equity in access and sustainability, giving the city a much-needed green lifeline while keeping urban wellbeing at the forefront.
