In light of the financial constraints and logistical challenges associated with traditional metro projects, Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) is exploring an alternative mass transport system for Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode.
The proposed solution, the LighTram Metro, offers a sustainable and cost-effective mode of transportation, comparable to conventional metro systems but without the hefty expenses and complex infrastructure. LighTram Metro has been successfully adopted in cities like Brisbane, Australia, due to its ability to operate at road level, elevated, and underground. This flexibility, combined with lower costs, makes it an attractive option for Kerala, which is currently facing a significant fund crunch. The LighTram Metro’s minimal financial burden ensures that it will not heavily impact future generations, making it a prudent choice for the state. KMRL is also considering the implementation of LighTram Metro in Kochi to connect regions where traditional metro systems are impractical. A KMRL official highlighted that one of the major benefits of the LighTram Metro is the convenience it offers to passengers, who would not need to spend additional time ascending stairs to reach elevated platforms.
The official further elaborated that while the Kochi Metro is projected to reach optimal utilisation in the next 30 years, the LighTram Metro is expected to gain wider acceptance among passengers by providing diverse travel options with seamless connections to buses and trains. The system’s design allows it to function alongside existing road, elevated, and underground metro rail systems. The LighTram Metro, with its three-coach configuration and 25-metre length, can accommodate up to 240 passengers. These electric-hybrid trams are particularly noteworthy for their quick charging capability, requiring just six minutes to charge fully and covering distances up to 45 kilometres. Additionally, they are designed to be differently abled friendly, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility.
By adopting the LighTram Metro system, KMRL aims to address the transportation needs of Kerala’s urban centres more efficiently. This initiative represents a forward-thinking approach to urban transit, leveraging modern technology to create a more sustainable and user-friendly public transportation network. The decision to implement LighTram Metro in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode underscores KMRL’s commitment to innovative and cost-effective solutions for urban mobility. This project is set to revolutionise the public transport landscape in Kerala, providing a reliable and efficient alternative to conventional metro systems.
“Moving ahead with a conventional metro in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode is difficult as getting funds will be a challenge considering the state’s financial situation. Constructing a metro rail is also more time-consuming,” said a source.
“As per the plan, the Thiruvananthapuram Metro is around 45km. The cost of building a metro rail is Rs 250 crore per km. The LighTram can achieve this at one-fourth the cost,” added a source.
