Mangaluru’s government Lady Goshen Hospital has been selected for a Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Department award after recording zero maternal deaths in 304 legal abortions and their follow-up care during 2025–26, according to an announcement reported by Prajavani.
The hospital was ranked first in the state for protecting maternal health following legal abortions, the report said. The assessment was conducted by the Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Department in collaboration with i-PAS Development Foundation, which studies sexual and reproductive health.
The survey found a 100% success rate in the legal abortion and post-abortion care managed by Lady Goshen Hospital during the period. The report did not provide details of the award ceremony or specify the criteria used to compare hospitals across Karnataka.
Dr Durgaprasad M R, the hospital’s medical superintendent, said 95% of patients undergoing abortions were counselled to adopt and continue family planning methods. He attributed the hospital’s zero maternal mortality outcome to systems including the identification of high-risk pregnancies, an obstetric intensive care unit, an obstetric critical care unit and a high-risk delivery unit.
The hospital’s work covers both the procedure and care after an abortion. The report said i-PAS records maternal mortality during abortion-related care and also conducts a broader assessment of the mother’s health. The health department said studies had been conducted across different areas and described Lady Goshen Hospital as being at the forefront of abortion and post-abortion healthcare.
The figures place the focus on the capacity of a public hospital to combine legal abortion services, risk identification, critical care and family-planning counselling within one maternal-health system. However, the supplied report does not provide the statewide comparison figures, the number of hospitals surveyed, the clinical methods used, or the specific period within 2025–26 during which the 304 procedures took place.
The health department and i-PAS collaboration will continue to be relevant to the documentation of maternal outcomes and the assessment of women’s health during abortion-related care, according to the information reported.
