A technical failure on the Konkan Railway near Sawarde in Maharashtra halted train movement in both directions for about 90 minutes on Saturday, delaying the Mumbai–Ratnagiri Jan Shatabdi, Tejas Express and other services during the busy Ganeshotsav travel period.
The fault occurred at around 11.30 am approximately eight kilometres from Sawarde station. Following the disruption, trains travelling from Mumbai towards Ratnagiri were stopped at Sawarde station, while rail traffic on both directions remained suspended as repair work began.
The Jan Shatabdi and Tejas Express were among the services affected. According to the report, several trains were still being held at Sawarde until about 1.15 pm, leaving passengers waiting for movement to resume at the station. The disruption continued for roughly one and a half hours after the technical problem was detected.
The stoppage affected passengers travelling to the Konkan region for Ganeshotsav, when demand on the route rises sharply. The report said the railway has been operating several special trains to accommodate the seasonal rush, resulting in heavy passenger movement on the route. Children and senior citizens were among those facing difficulties while waiting for the trains to restart.
The technical failure also affected scheduled timings beyond the immediate stoppage. Some trains were running approximately four hours behind their planned schedule, according to the report. The disruption therefore extended beyond passengers on trains directly held at Sawarde, affecting the wider timetable on the route.
Konkan Railway authorities took up repair work immediately after the fault was detected.
