The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for parts of the region, warning of lightning, gusty winds and intermittent rain between Thursday and Friday, bringing temporary relief but also renewed concerns over urban flooding and civic preparedness.
According to regional forecasts, the city could witness rain-bearing cloud activity beginning Wednesday evening, with stronger thunderstorm systems expected over the following two days. Temperatures that recently hovered around 37°C to 39°C are projected to decline marginally as moisture-laden winds strengthen across eastern India.The Kolkata rain forecast arrives at a sensitive period for the city’s infrastructure network. With pre-monsoon showers intensifying earlier than expected, drainage systems, low-lying roads and public transport corridors are once again under scrutiny. The IMD has also warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching up to 40–50 kmph in isolated pockets. Such conditions can affect overhead electrical networks, roadside trees and informal market structures, particularly in high-density urban areas.Beyond immediate weather disruption, the Kolkata rain forecast highlights a broader urban challenge facing Indian metros adapting infrastructure to rapidly changing climate conditions. Heatwaves followed by abrupt storm activity are becoming more common across eastern India, increasing stress on public health systems, transport reliability and electricity demand.Environmental researchers point out that expanding concrete surfaces and shrinking urban wetlands continue to reduce the city’s natural capacity to absorb excess rainwater.
