Ship repair activity at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port is gaining scale as the CSL Kolkata Ship Repair Unit continues to expand operations at Netaji Subhas Dock. The facility’s growing vessel workload, infrastructure investment and specialist staffing point to a wider shift in eastern India’s maritime economy, where keeping ships in domestic yards could support local jobs, supply chains and port efficiency.
The repair unit, operated by Cochin Shipyard at the Kolkata port complex, has been functioning since 2019. Public records confirm that the facility uses two dry docks and associated port infrastructure for ship repair. Cochin Shipyard continues to list the Kolkata unit among its active repair facilities, while recent tenders and recruitment activity indicate ongoing operational requirements.Latest figures released in connection with the facility show that the unit has handled 42 vessels since operations began. More than ₹50 crore has also been invested in upgrading its repair infrastructure. The partners have reported cumulative profit sharing of around ₹23 crore over seven financial years, with the unit’s share for 2025–26 reported at ₹8.79 crore.For Kolkata, the significance extends beyond the balance sheet. Ship repair generates demand for welders, electricians, marine engineers, fabricators, riggers, logistics operators and a network of smaller industrial suppliers. That can create economic activity around an existing port rather than requiring an entirely new industrial footprint.
The location also matters. Kolkata serves the Hooghly river system and wider eastern inland and coastal shipping network. Earlier port records identified significant vessel activity in the eastern corridor, while separate initiatives have sought to bring additional dry-dock capacity into productive use. A stronger repair base can reduce the need for vessels operating in the region to travel longer distances for maintenance, potentially cutting turnaround time and associated logistics costs.Urban and environmental considerations will become increasingly important as activity expands. Ship repair is resource-intensive and can involve hazardous materials, coatings, waste streams and contaminated water. Future capacity growth will therefore depend not only on dock utilisation but also on stronger waste management, worker safety, water-quality controls and energy-efficient equipment.
The emerging Kolkata ship repair cluster also fits into India’s broader effort to build domestic maritime capabilities.
