India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper service is set to connect Guwahati with Howrah in West Bengal, marking a significant expansion of long-distance rail infrastructure across eastern and north-eastern India. The new overnight train follows the successful completion of technical trials and safety certification, reflecting a broader push to modernise inter-city mobility while improving access between major economic centres.
Unlike the existing Vande Bharat network, which primarily serves daytime routes, the Vande Bharat Sleeper has been designed for overnight journeys spanning around 1,000 to 1,500 kilometres. The introduction of sleeper coaches aims to reduce travel time while offering a higher level of passenger comfort for business travellers, students, tourists and families travelling between the Northeast and eastern India.The Guwahati–Howrah corridor is strategically important for regional trade, tourism and labour mobility. Improved rail connectivity is expected to strengthen economic integration by providing faster movement of people between Assam, West Bengal and neighbouring states. Urban planners note that reliable overnight rail services can help reduce dependence on short-haul flights and road transport, supporting more energy-efficient travel choices over longer distances when integrated with local public transport systems.
According to railway authorities, the train has undergone extensive testing before entering commercial service. The fully air-conditioned rake is equipped with modern passenger amenities, upgraded safety systems and redesigned sleeper berths intended to improve comfort during extended journeys. Operational speeds will remain within approved safety limits despite the train’s higher design capability, reflecting the need to balance efficiency with network reliability.Industry observers believe the launch could influence travel behaviour across the eastern corridor by offering a premium rail alternative that remains more affordable than air travel for many passengers.
