Metro infrastructure in Kolkata has taken another step towards cleaner urban transport with the commissioning of a 500 kWp solar power plant at Jessore Road Metro Station on the Yellow Line. The installation is expected to reduce dependence on conventional electricity, lower operational costs and strengthen the city’s transition towards more sustainable public transport infrastructure as energy demand continues to grow.

The newly operational rooftop facility has been designed to generate an average of around 1,800 units of electricity each day, primarily supplying auxiliary services such as station lighting, lifts and escalators. Any excess electricity produced will be integrated into the wider metro network, improving energy efficiency across operations rather than remaining confined to a single station.Urban planners increasingly view renewable energy integration within transport systems as a practical strategy for reducing emissions from rapidly expanding cities. While metro rail is already recognised as one of the most energy-efficient modes of mass transit, powering station infrastructure with renewable electricity further reduces operating costs and lessens pressure on conventional power grids during periods of high demand.Officials associated with the project indicate that the installation is expected to deliver significant annual savings on electricity expenditure, allowing investment in clean-energy infrastructure to recover its capital cost within a relatively short period. The solar installation has also been equipped with a cloud-based monitoring system, enabling real-time tracking of electricity generation and operational performance throughout its expected service life of around 25 years.

The Kolkata Metro Solar Power initiative is part of a wider programme to expand renewable energy capacity across stations, depots and operational facilities. Authorities are pursuing additional solar installations at multiple locations, with long-term plans aimed at substantially increasing the metro network’s renewable energy generation capacity. Such investments could help lower recurring operational expenses while supporting broader climate commitments within urban infrastructure.Energy experts note that integrating distributed solar systems into transport assets offers multiple urban benefits beyond financial savings.
