Kolkata Metro has completed a major traction power upgrade on the underground stretch of its Blue Line, replacing decades-old steel-based third rail infrastructure with an aluminium system designed to improve train frequency, reduce energy losses and strengthen long-term operational reliability across the city’s oldest rapid transit corridor.
The overhaul covers the underground sections between Noapara and Dum Dum, along with Belgachia to Mahanayak Uttam Kumar stations. Urban mobility experts view the intervention as a critical step in extending the lifespan of a corridor that carries some of the highest passenger volumes in eastern India while facing increasing pressure from ageing infrastructure and rising commuter demand.Transport planners say the shift to aluminium-based traction technology reflects a wider transition underway in Indian metro systems towards lower-energy and lower-maintenance operations. Aluminium conducts electricity more efficiently than conventional steel rails, allowing trains to accelerate faster while reducing voltage drops during peak operations. Officials associated with the project indicated that the change is expected to support future reductions in train headway, potentially enabling more frequent services on the heavily used north-south corridor.The Blue Line modernisation forms part of a broader infrastructure renewal programme unfolding across Kolkata Metro. In recent months, authorities have initiated upgrades to tunnel ventilation systems, traction substations and signalling networks as the four-decade-old transit system undergoes phased rehabilitation. Several sections of the corridor currently operate below their designed speed potential because of ageing track and electrical assets.
Industry observers note that improving train turnaround and reducing technical disruptions could significantly affect daily commuting patterns in Kolkata, where road congestion and unreliable surface transport continue to burden workers and students. Faster and more frequent metro operations may also support modal shift away from private vehicles, a key requirement for reducing urban emissions and improving air quality in dense metropolitan regions.The aluminium third rail system is also expected to reduce operational heat generation inside tunnels, lowering the cooling load on underground stations and ventilation systems. Metro authorities estimate that the project could contribute to a sizeable reduction in lifecycle carbon emissions, aligning with broader efforts to improve energy efficiency in public transport infrastructure.The infrastructure upgrade arrives at a time when Kolkata Metro is attempting to rebuild commuter confidence after repeated service disruptions, capacity constraints and delays linked to ageing assets.
