The country’s oldest metro network is preparing for a significant fleet expansion, with 14 next-generation trainsets expected to join operations during the 2026-27 financial year. The move comes as the city continues to extend its metro corridors and accommodate rising commuter demand, signalling another step towards strengthening sustainable urban mobility while easing pressure on Kolkata’s road-based transport system.
The planned induction forms part of a broader modernisation strategy for the Kolkata Metro expansion, aimed at increasing operational capacity as multiple corridors gradually become fully functional. Transport officials have indicated that the additional rolling stock will improve fleet availability, enabling operators to increase service frequency and respond more efficiently to passenger demand across the expanding network.
The new trains are expected to feature contemporary propulsion technology and upgraded operational systems that can deliver improved reliability, greater energy efficiency and smoother passenger movement. Railway authorities have stated that the coaches will be built with three-phase AC traction motors and designed for higher operational performance, reflecting the shift towards more efficient metro systems capable of supporting growing urban populations.
