Kolkata Metro Enhances Connectivity with Tunnel Integration

The integration of the Yellow and Orange Metro lines has commenced near Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. This underground convergence, approximately 400 metres before the airport station, marks a pivotal step in enhancing the city’s metro connectivity. The Yellow Line, extending from Noapara to the airport, is currently awaiting final inspection by the Commission of Railway Safety (CRS) before operations can begin.

Simultaneously, Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) is facilitating the track-level convergence of both lines at the airport end. This integration involves the use of the cut-and-cover construction method, necessitating a three-day traffic block on the main airport-bound road. The central median dividing the inbound and outbound lanes is being dismantled, and post-diversion, the airport-bound road will be reduced to two lanes to accommodate tunnel construction. Two-thirds of the diverted lane heading towards the airport will serve as a construction zone. Vehicles approaching the airport from VIP Road will be rerouted after taking the right-turn flyover. Contractors managing the 900-metre underground segment of the Orange Line have initiated the process of levelling both road flanks, which currently operate at different elevations. This levelling ensures that both metro lines align seamlessly within the convergence tunnel.

Reinforced concrete structures are being inserted beneath the airport approach road to ensure that ongoing airport traffic remains unaffected during the tunnelling process. Coordination meetings between RVNL and local authorities have been held to ensure smooth traffic flow during construction, aiming to minimise disruptions for travellers using the airport. The integration of these metro lines is part of a broader initiative to enhance Kolkata’s metro network, providing residents and travellers with a faster and more efficient mode of transportation. Once operational, the Yellow and Orange Lines will offer seamless connectivity to the airport, reducing travel time and alleviating road congestion.

This development underscores the city’s commitment to modernising its infrastructure and promoting sustainable urban mobility. The successful integration of the Yellow and Orange Lines will not only improve connectivity but also contribute to the city’s economic growth and environmental sustainability by reducing dependence on private vehicles and lowering carbon emissions. As the project progresses, authorities remain focused on ensuring the safety and convenience of commuters, with plans to complete the integration work promptly. The completion of this tunnel integration will mark a significant milestone in Kolkata’s journey towards becoming a more connected and sustainable metropolis.
