Kolkata’s Metro Railway, affectionately known as the city’s Lifeline, is making substantial strides towards environmental sustainability by vigorously adopting renewable energy sources. For over four decades, this vital transportation artery has not only connected the city’s myriad communities but is now playing a crucial role in significantly reducing its carbon footprint. This ambitious initiative has gained considerable momentum, particularly aligning with the government’s visionary PM Surya Ghar Scheme and the overarching objective of Indian Railways to achieve Net Zero Carbon Emitter status by 2030.

This transformative shift underscores a deep commitment to fostering a cleaner, more equitable, and eco-friendly urban landscape for millions of daily commuters. Currently, the Metro Railway boasts an impressive total solar power capacity of 4.556 MWp, strategically installed across various service buildings and carsheds. This installed capacity is already yielding tangible results in the quest for energy independence and environmental stewardship. In April 2025 alone, the Metro Railway generated a remarkable 47.21 thousand units of electricity from its solar power installations. The efficiency and performance of this extensive solar power generation system are meticulously monitored through a cutting-edge cloud-based system, ensuring optimal energy capture and operational insights. Presently, the Metro Railway annually produces an average of 57 lakh units of clean solar energy, leading to a substantial reduction of approximately 49 lakh tonnes of carbon footprints each year, a commendable contribution to regional air quality and climate action.

The strategic expansion plans for Kolkata Metro’s solar footprint are truly ambitious. Upcoming projects alone are projected to generate an additional 14500 KWp of electricity, a significant leap towards meeting the system’s burgeoning energy demands through renewable sources. Currently, the Metro Railway generates an average of 16,000 units of solar power daily. However, once all these new solar power plants are fully installed and operational, this daily generation capacity is projected to surge to an astounding 110,000 units. This exponential increase signifies a decisive shift towards energy self-sufficiency, reducing reliance on conventional, carbon-intensive power grids and bolstering the city’s energy security.

This aggressive pursuit of solar energy aligns perfectly with the broader national agenda for sustainable development and directly contributes to India’s climate commitments. As urban populations continue to grow, public transport systems like the Kolkata Metro are vital in managing congestion and reducing vehicular emissions.
