Kolkata Metro Disruption Ends After Maha Ashtami Glitch

Kolkata Metro services on the North-South corridor were disrupted for about an hour on Monday evening after a technical glitch at Mahanayak Uttam Kumar station, with full services restored before the peak of Maha Ashtami travel ended.

According to officials, the problem occurred at the Tollygunge station at around 5.31 p.m. The disruption affected the Blue Line, which runs between Dakshineswar and Kavi Subhash, and came as large numbers of people were using the Metro to visit Durga Puja pandals across Kolkata.

Following the incident, truncated services were operated in both directions between Maidan and Dakshineswar stations. This arrangement kept trains running on part of the corridor while the technical issue was addressed, but services were not available across the entire North-South stretch during the disruption.

Officials said the technical problem was resolved and services were restored along the full Blue Line at 6.23 p.m. The restoration brought the corridor back to normal operations after approximately 52 minutes of disruption.

The timing was significant for Kolkata’s public transport system because Maha Ashtami is one of the busiest days of the Durga Puja period. Metro services are used by large numbers of residents and visitors travelling between neighbourhoods and festival venues, making the North-South corridor an important mobility link during the celebrations.

The incident was confined to the Metro’s operations on the affected corridor, and the service interruption was attributed by officials to the technical glitch at Mahanayak Uttam Kumar station. No further details about the nature of the fault or any injuries were provided in the information available.

The restoration of the entire Blue Line at 6.23 p.m. was the immediate operational milestone announced by Metro officials. The corridor connects several major parts of the city and remains one of Kolkata’s principal rapid-transit routes.
