Kolkata Hotel Investment Expands as IHCL Opens Altair House

The Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) and the Ambuja Neotia Group have launched Altair House – IHCL SeleQtions in Kolkata and Siliguri, alongside an announced ₹2,700 crore investment in hospitality projects across West Bengal.

The launch, announced on October 31, covers the boutique Altair House in EcoSpace Business Park, New Town, Kolkata, and another hotel in the Uttaran Township area of Siliguri. The partnership’s investment plan includes projects in Kolkata, Raichak, Digha, Siliguri, Lataguri, Kalimpong and Darjeeling.

The Kolkata property has 42 rooms and suites, while the Siliguri hotel has 60 rooms and suites. Altair House uses Bengal’s artistic and architectural heritage as its central design theme, with rooms and artworks drawing from Santiniketan, the Sundarbans, Kantha stitch traditions and recognisable Kolkata landmarks.

Artwork and design references include Howrah Bridge, Prinsep Ghat, the Kolkata Race Course and Esplanade. The property uses darker shades and a rustic interior style to create a hotel experience built around the city and the wider cultural identity of Bengal.

The launch places the new hotel capacity within a broader expansion strategy rather than presenting it as an isolated property opening. The announced projects span established urban centres, coastal destinations, hill towns and forest tourism areas. The source report did not provide individual project costs, construction timelines, land details or expected completion dates for these proposed developments.

IHCL chief executive officer Puneet Chhatwal said tourism and hospitality generate direct employment as well as jobs in connected sectors. He said every direct job in the sector creates between eight and 10 indirect employment opportunities in other areas.

Harshavardhan Neotia of the Ambuja Neotia Group said Bengal has significant tourism potential. He said the purpose of starting hotel projects in different parts of the state was to promote tourism and develop new destinations.

For Kolkata, the project adds boutique accommodation capacity in New Town, one of the city’s major planned urban districts and a location that combines commercial, business and leisure uses. The stated investment programme also links the city’s hospitality expansion to a wider regional network, connecting Kolkata with destinations such as Raichak, Digha, Siliguri, Kalimpong and Darjeeling.

The announcement does not specify the implementation schedule for the remaining projects or the number of rooms planned across the full ₹2,700 crore programme. Details on construction phases, approvals and operating timelines are expected to determine how quickly the proposed investment translates into additional tourism infrastructure across West Bengal.
