Cities including Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, and several fast-growing coastal and river-linked urban centres are emerging as particularly vulnerable due to dense populations, ageing infrastructure, and rapid construction-led expansion.
Recent assessments by climate researchers and urban resilience experts indicate that extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and more disruptive across Indian cities. Urban flooding, prolonged heatwaves, and coastal erosion are now affecting transport networks, water systems, public health infrastructure, and residential neighbourhoods with greater regularity, exposing gaps in long-term planning.The growing urban climate risks are especially visible in cities built around coastlines, wetlands, and river basins.
