A crucial safety assessment of the city’s Green Line Metro has brought Kolkata a step closer to introducing automated train operations, marking an important milestone in the modernisation of one of India’s most technically complex urban transit corridors. The inspection, conducted by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), is expected to determine whether the corridor is ready for the next phase of operations under an advanced signalling system.

The review focused on the East-West Metro corridor linking Howrah Maidan and Sector V, a route that combines elevated infrastructure with India’s first underwater metro tunnel beneath the Hooghly River. The inspection examined operational readiness, signalling performance, emergency response systems and overall passenger safety before any approval for automated operations can be considered.Unlike conventional metro services, the proposed system relies on Automatic Train Operation (ATO), an advanced layer of Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) technology. Under this arrangement, trains can regulate acceleration, braking and station stopping through digital signalling, while trained personnel continue to oversee critical operational functions and passenger safety. Experts say such systems improve consistency, optimise energy consumption and reduce service delays, particularly on high-demand urban corridors.

The Green Line Metro has undergone extensive testing over several months before reaching this inspection stage. Railway safety authorities carried out simulated emergency scenarios, station-level operational checks and assessments of control systems to evaluate how the network would respond under routine and exceptional conditions. These procedures form part of India’s mandatory certification process before new railway technologies can be introduced for passenger services.For Kolkata, the transition carries implications beyond technological advancement. Urban planners note that improving service frequency and operational precision could strengthen public transport’s competitiveness against private vehicles, helping reduce congestion and transport-related emissions in one of the country’s most densely populated metropolitan regions.
