Kolkata’s ageing yellow taxi fleet could soon enter a new phase of urban mobility transition after a new electric retrofit initiative brought together academic researchers and public-sector energy stakeholders to redesign the city’s iconic Ambassador cabs for zero-emission transport. The move is expected to test whether legacy transport systems in Indian metros can be modernised without erasing their social and cultural identity.

The prototype development programme, led through a collaboration involving Jadavpur University and Damodar Valley Corporation, focuses on converting conventional fuel-powered Ambassador taxis into electric vehicles through retrofitting technology. The effort arrives at a time when Kolkata is confronting rising transport emissions, shrinking public transit reliability, and growing pressure to comply with cleaner mobility targets.Urban transport analysts say the project reflects a broader shift in Indian cities where older commercial fleets are being reconsidered not merely as heritage assets, but as candidates for low-carbon transformation. Kolkata’s yellow taxis, once synonymous with the city’s streetscape, have steadily declined due to ageing vehicles, high operating costs, stricter emission rules and competition from app-based mobility services.The electric taxi prototype is expected to evaluate battery integration, chassis redesign, energy efficiency and operational feasibility for dense urban conditions. Technical teams are also examining whether retrofitting existing vehicles could reduce lifecycle emissions compared with complete vehicle replacement. Experts involved in urban sustainability note that reuse-oriented mobility solutions may help reduce industrial waste while extending the economic life of transport assets.

The timing is significant for Kolkata, where debates over transport modernisation increasingly intersect with concerns around air quality, congestion and equitable mobility access. While several Indian cities have accelerated electric bus and two-wheeler deployment, electric taxi adoption has remained uneven due to charging gaps, financing constraints and limited fleet conversion infrastructure.Transport planners believe retrofitted electric taxi systems could offer an intermediate pathway for drivers unable to afford entirely new electric vehicles. This is particularly relevant in Kolkata’s informal and semi-formal transport economy, where many operators rely on ageing vehicles for livelihood security. Industry observers also indicate that scalable retrofit models may create new opportunities for local manufacturing, battery servicing and green mobility employment.However, the initiative still faces regulatory and commercial hurdles. Retrofitted vehicles must meet evolving safety and homologation standards before wider deployment. Questions also remain around charging access, financing structures and long-term maintenance support. Public response to earlier attempts at preserving Kolkata’s taxi identity has been mixed, with commuters increasingly prioritising affordability, reliability and cleaner transport over nostalgia.

Even so, the electric taxi programme signals a growing recognition that future-ready urban transport may depend as much on adaptive reuse as on entirely new infrastructure. For Kolkata, the success of the project could determine whether one of its most recognisable mobility symbols can evolve into a cleaner and more resilient part of the city’s transport network.
