Kolkata Durga Puja preparations have slowed across several parts of the city as sudden, localised showers force organisers to cover pandals, pause work and protect installations, while idol-makers and transporters take additional precautions against rain damage.
Puja committees including Maddox Square, Hatibagan Sarbojanin, Md Ali Park, Kumartuli Sarbojanin, Chorebagan, Chetla Agrani and Thakurpukur SB Park have introduced protective measures as preparations enter their final phase. Organisers of pujas being held in parks and open grounds have covered parts of their venues with tarpaulin so work can continue during unpredictable weather.
At College Square Sarbojanin Durgotsab Committee, work was stopped when rain began on Sunday. “It took the rest of the day for the area to dry up. This is causing delay but we do not want to put our workers at risk,” said chief organiser Bikash Majumdar.
At Chorebagan Sarbojanin in Radha Madhab Saha Lane, organisers covered the entire park with tarpaulin. Secretary Raj Kumar Sewda said the step was taken to prevent damage to the pandal and other installations while allowing preparations to be completed.
Rain has also complicated work in Kumartuli, where artisans are completing the final painting and finishing stages of Durga idols. Idols have been covered during sudden showers, while pedestal fans have been used to dry paint. Once completed, the idols must be moved from the artisan hub to individual pandals, making weather protection an additional part of the delivery process.
Several committees have kept idols and outdoor work areas under cover. At Baguiati Railpukur United Club, organisers covered the entire outdoor area, including the idol that was recently shifted to the pandal, according to organising committee member Gourab Biswas.
The disruptions come as deliveries are due in the next few days and pandal preparations enter their final stretch. Organisers and artisans are continuing to monitor the weather while balancing completion deadlines with the need to protect workers, idols, materials and temporary festival structures from further showers.
