The Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) is gearing up to issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the ambitious Marine Drive Expansion project. Following a state-level meeting led by the district collector, GCDA authorities have confirmed that the RFP will be released shortly, now that the election process has concluded.
“We had a high-level meeting and decided to issue the RFP after the election,” a GCDA official stated. The project will employ land pooling methods and will be implemented in three phases, transforming Kochi’s iconic waterfront.
The first phase of the expansion will focus on developing the area from Queens Walkway to the Vaduthala rail viaduct into an open space for visitors. Land pooling, a method where landowners collectively hand over their land for public projects or infrastructure development, will be pivotal for this project. After the infrastructure is developed, the remaining land is returned to the original owners, though only 60% of the original area, with a value three to four times higher.
The Marine Drive Expansion aims to extend the development northwards towards Vaduthala, covering the area from Marine Drive and Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary in the south to Cheranalloor grama panchayat in the north, including Vaduthala, Pachalam, and Mulavukad Island to the east. This expansion is expected to significantly enhance the city’s infrastructure and provide a major boost to the local economy.
By using land pooling, the GCDA anticipates a substantial reduction in project costs. A dedicated committee, headed by the district collector and including GCDA’s town planning officials, has been established to oversee and expedite follow-up actions.
