Railway Protection Force personnel arrested an Andhra Pradesh native after he allegedly threw stones at three trains near Ernakulam South railway station on Sunday night, damaging a coach window and creating a passenger-safety risk.
The accused, identified as Shiva Jagadish, allegedly targeted the Alappuzha–Chennai Express, the Bengaluru–Ernakulam Express and the Karaikal Express. The trains were near the station when the incidents occurred, with the Karaikal Express being shunted at the time, according to the report.
A window pane near berth number seven in the B3 coach of the Alappuzha–Chennai Express was shattered. The report did not specify whether passengers were injured or whether the damage caused any operational disruption.
Jagadish was caught by an RPF squad as he was allegedly preparing to throw stones again. The arrest was carried out under the leadership of Ernakulam South RPF inspector Binoy Antony.
The report said the accused was reportedly under the influence of alcohol when the incident occurred. It did not provide further details about his motive, the charges filed or the next legal steps in the case.
Stone-pelting at moving or stationed trains can damage windows and expose passengers and railway staff to injury. The incident near one of Kochi’s key railway stations also highlights the role of railway security teams in monitoring vulnerable sections around train approaches, platforms and shunting areas.
Further details about the case and the legal proceedings are expected from the Railway Protection Force and other investigating authorities.
