The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has initiated the construction of the Kharghar-Turbhe Tunnel Link Road (KTLR) in Navi Mumbai.
This ambitious ₹2,100 crore project is poised to revolutionise commuting patterns in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) by dramatically reducing travel time and alleviating traffic congestion. The KTLR is set to slash the current 40-minute journey between Turbhe and Kharghar to a mere 10 minutes. This transformation is expected to significantly ease the daily commute for thousands of residents and professionals traversing the Sion-Panvel Highway. The project encompasses a 5.5-kilometre route featuring a 1.8-kilometre twin tunnel under Kharghar Hill and a 3.4-kilometre elevated viaduct, commencing at Juinagar railway station and concluding near Central Park in Kharghar.
Beyond enhancing travel efficiency, the KTLR is strategically designed to bolster economic growth and urban development in Navi Mumbai. The improved connectivity is anticipated to stimulate residential, industrial, and commercial activities, particularly in areas like Vashi, Juinagar, and Nerul. The project’s alignment with key landmarks, including the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport and the Atal Setu Bridge, underscores its potential to integrate the region more seamlessly into the broader MMR infrastructure Despite the project’s promising benefits, concerns have been raised regarding its environmental impact. Activists have highlighted the absence of a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the tunnel segment passing through the eco-sensitive Kharghar hills. The Maharashtra State Environment and Climate Change Department has reportedly stated that information pertaining to the EIA is not available, raising questions about the project’s adherence to environmental protocols.
The Kharghar-Turbhe Tunnel Link Road stands as a testament to CIDCO’s commitment to enhancing urban infrastructure and connectivity. While the project promises substantial benefits in terms of reduced travel time and economic development, it is imperative that environmental considerations are thoroughly addressed to ensure sustainable urban growth.
