Kerala is likely to receive light to heavy rain until Sunday, with the India Meteorological Department warning of very heavy rain in some places and issuing orange alerts for four districts on Thursday. The forecast also includes thunderstorms and strong winds that could disrupt travel and daily activity.
Kozhikode, Malappuram, Thrissur and Ernakulam are under orange warnings on Thursday, while the remaining districts are under yellow warnings, according to a report by the Times of India. The alerts follow the formation of multiple weather systems over the Bay of Bengal.
The IMD has forecast very heavy rain in some locations on Thursday, Friday and Sunday. On Friday, all districts in Kerala will remain under yellow alert. The forecast indicates that isolated places may experience thunderstorms accompanied by winds travelling at 30 to 40 kmph until Friday.
The warning pattern is expected to shift on Saturday. Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod are scheduled to be under orange warnings, while the rest of the state will remain under yellow alert. Stronger winds of 40 to 50 kmph are possible in isolated areas along with thunderstorms and rain.
On Sunday, orange alerts have been issued for Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam and Idukki. The remaining districts will be covered by the corresponding weather warning issued by the IMD.
The alerts are relevant for Kerala’s urban areas, where intense rain and strong winds can affect road movement, drainage systems, construction sites and outdoor activity. The report does not specify local evacuation orders, school closures or transport restrictions. Residents and local authorities will need to follow further updates from the IMD and district administrations as the warning period progresses.
