The Karnataka voter list revision process has issued notices to 7.31 lakh voters, with hearings for recipients beginning on September 3, according to information from the State Chief Electoral Officer’s office. The exercise covers the state’s special intensive revision of electoral rolls.
A draft voter list published on August 24 included 4.46 crore voters. The Chief Electoral Officer’s office had earlier said notices would be issued to 43.81 lakh voters as part of the revision process. Of that total, notices have so far been delivered to 7.31 lakh people, while notices for another 36.49 lakh voters are yet to be issued.
Booth-level officers are distributing the notices to voters within their respective areas. The official communication says recipients must appear for a hearing seven days after receiving the notice and bring the required documents. The hearing process began on Thursday, September 3.
By Friday afternoon, officials had completed hearings for 206 voters, the report said. The hearings are intended to process the notices issued during the electoral roll revision exercise.
The State Chief Electoral Officer’s office said the deadline for disposing of the notices is October 12. It added that all notices had already been printed and would be distributed by booth-level officers.
Voters who receive notices must attend the hearing in person. The instructions do not allow another person to appear on their behalf, according to sources in the Chief Electoral Officer’s office cited in the communication.
The revision places responsibility on voters who receive notices to respond within the specified process and submit the required documents. Further hearings and notice distribution will continue through the October 12 deadline set by the election authorities.
