Karnataka Approves Plan to Develop Satellite Towns Near Bengaluru to Ease Congestion
The Karnataka State Cabinet has approved a comprehensive plan to develop satellite towns surrounding the city. These towns, set to be connected to Bengaluru through improved road and rail infrastructure, aim to decentralise urban development, creating new urban spaces while providing better opportunities for employment and living.
The announcement was made by Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil after a Cabinet meeting on Thursday. Under this plan, towns such as Devanahalli, Nelamangala, Hoskote, Doddaballapur, and Magadi will be developed into thriving urban centres. The initiative is part of the Greater Bengaluru Development Authority’s (GBDA) ambitious project, aimed at relieving pressure on Bengaluru’s overcrowded infrastructure. Minister Patil explained that the project, known as the “Greater Bengaluru Suburban Project,” will focus on areas like Bidadi Hobli, Byramangala, Bannigiri, Hosur, Kempaiah Palya, and Harohalli Hobli in the Ramnagar district. This development is expected to transform these regions into well-planned urban hubs with robust infrastructure and connectivity to Bengaluru, both by road and rail.
The government is also integrating the Bidadi Smart City project into the Greater Bengaluru development scheme. This will make Bidadi a key focal point for urban growth, improving its attractiveness as a place to live, work, and invest in. The development of these areas is expected to stimulate job creation, attract investments, and improve the overall quality of life for residents. One of the key components of the plan is the acquisition of approximately 6,023 acres of land across the targeted areas. This land will be used for urban development, with portions allocated for public amenities such as parks, water bodies, and residential areas. This move comes as part of a larger effort to develop 8,943 acres of land, ensuring that the growth of these satellite towns will be sustainable and well-integrated into Bengaluru’s broader urban framework.
The project is seen as a much-needed step to relieve the increasing strain on Bengaluru’s infrastructure, which has long struggled with traffic congestion, inadequate housing, and a lack of adequate public spaces.
