More than 30 volunteers removed around two tractor loads of waste from the Kapila River and cleared a 50-metre bathing-step area at Mallanamoole Mutt in Nanjangud, Mysuru district, during a cleanliness drive on Sunday.
The campaign was organised by the Yuva Brigade as part of Kannada Rajyotsava activities. The work began at 6.30 am and continued until 2 pm at the Kapila River bathing ghat.
The volunteers cleared dense vegetation that had covered the stone steps and made the ghat visible for public use again. They entered the river to remove clothes, plastic waste, broken and discarded pots, containers and aquatic weeds that had accumulated in the water and along the steps.
The cleanup highlighted the condition of a public riverfront space that had remained covered by vegetation for several years. The bathing ghat at Mallanamoole Mutt is used by visitors and local residents, while the removed waste included material that had accumulated both on the steps and inside the river.
Imamdi Siddalinga Swamiji of Mallanamoole Mutt visited the riverbank and encouraged the volunteers participating in the labour service. The mutt also arranged refreshments and lunch for the campaigners.
Yuva Brigade coordinator Chandrashekar and volunteers including Kishore, Ravi Shastri, Girish, Sunil, Rangaswamy, Prajwal, Lohith, Srikanta, Ravi Sadashiva, Shilpa, Kusuma, Gautham, Chandan, Shashank, Mahadeva, Ravi, Nirupam Patel, Sharath Chandra, Kushal, Vikhyath Surya, Rakesh Prajapati, Dharma, Trishika and Neelagreeva took part in the drive.
The campaign resulted in the removal of the reported waste and vegetation from the ghat area. The supplied report does not specify whether a continuing maintenance or waste-management plan has been announced for the riverfront.
