JSW Greentech has received an order from JSW Cement for 100 electric tractor trucks to move industrial cargo between Nandyal in Andhra Pradesh and Vijaynagar in Karnataka, marking the first commercial sale of vehicles under its AMPSTAR brand.
The 4×2, 55-tonne electric prime movers will be used for heavy-duty industrial haulage at JSW Cement’s Vijaynagar site. JSW Greentech said the trucks will transport clinker and slag along the 330-km route, with the fleet expected to carry an estimated 1,25,000 tonnes of cargo each month.
The deployment will use a battery-as-a-service arrangement. JSW Eco-Mobility will provide the batteries and develop a corridor supported by four battery-swapping stations, according to a company release. The arrangement is intended to allow the trucks to operate without relying on fixed charging stops along the freight route.
The 55-tonne electric tractor truck was first showcased when JSW Greentech launched the AMPSTAR brand. Chief executive officer Sumit Mittal described the vehicle as one of the most demanding architectures in commercial transportation and said the company had reached the deployment milestone in just over a month.
Narinder Kahlon, director for finance at JSW Cement, said the integrated electric mobility solution would help the company reduce its dependence on diesel and lower emissions while maintaining operational efficiency. The company did not provide a separate estimate of the emissions reduction expected from the 100-truck deployment.
The order follows certification for AMPSTAR’s 4×2 and 6×4 tractor trucks under the Central Motor Vehicle Rules. The certification was issued by the Automotive Research Association of India and enables the models to be deployed on Indian roads, the company said.
JSW Greentech entered the domestic commercial mobility segment with the AMPSTAR brand, under which it plans to sell electric buses and trucks. In September, it unveiled the 55-tonne electric tractor-trailer and an electric bus. The company said it has invested ₹2,500 crore so far and established a manufacturing unit in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra.
The facility has an annual production capacity of 15,000 electric buses and trucks, according to JSW Greentech. It will include an automated truck-cabin production line and an integrated battery ecosystem. The company’s next operational milestone is the deployment of the 100 AMPSTAR trucks and the supporting battery-swapping corridor for JSW Cement’s freight movement between Nandyal and Vijaynagar.
