Jiribam-Imphal Rail Line Nears Completion with Longest Tunnel

The construction of the Jiribam-Imphal new line railway project is at final stage, which will connect Manipur’s capital to the rest of the country. The project includes a 110 km long track with 52 tunnels and bridges, with tunnel number 12 being the longest one. It is a 10.275 km long tunnel that passes through the most complex geological conditions with fragile soil type. The tunnel includes a 529 metre RCC ramp with a parallel safety tunnel of length 8.30 km.

The railway authorities have faced several challenges due to the complex geological conditions of the Imphal Valley. They adopted vertical shaft technology to build tunnels to overcome these challenges. This project is one of the most important railway projects for boosting rail connectivity in the North-Eastern states of India. The North East Frontier Railway is executing several such projects to improve connectivity in the region. However,  construction of the Jiribam-Imphal railway line has been one of the most challenging jobs for them. The railway line is expected to enhance connectivity in the region and bring economic growth by making transportation easier and faster.
