Jamshedpur Dengue Drive Removes 26,048 Mosquito Breeding Sites

Tata Steel Utility and Infrastructure Services Ltd (TSUISL) has removed 26,048 mosquito breeding sites across its command area in Jamshedpur during an intensified dengue-prevention drive conducted between April and September, according to a company statement reported by The Times of India.

The utility arm surveyed 4,89,601 houses through door-to-door inspections. Field teams identified 14,193 breeding sites inside homes and 11,855 outside them, and TSUISL said all the identified sites were eliminated. The exercise covered areas under the company’s operational command in the city.

The campaign also involved reporting mosquito-breeding cases found outside TSUISL’s command area to the Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC). The company said it referred 2,654 such cases to the civic body for action and issued 2,115 notices to households and premises where breeding sources were found.

TSUISL said the intervention was accompanied by a decline in the house index, a measure of the percentage of inspected homes found to contain Aedes mosquito larvae. The average house index between April and August was 2.7, below the operational benchmark of 5, and fell to 2.4 in September, the company said.

The reported figures come as dengue prevention in Jamshedpur continues to depend on source reduction at household and neighbourhood level. Aedes mosquitoes can breed in small collections of stagnant water, including discarded containers, tyres and other items commonly found around homes and institutions. The drive therefore combined inspections with awareness activities and collection efforts.

TSUISL conducted 212 awareness programmes in communities and educational institutions and organised 104 street plays in schools. Its teams also carried out more than 4.4 lakh door-to-door interactions to encourage residents to remove stagnant water and prevent the formation of breeding sites.

As part of its information, education and communication activities, the company organised 92 van-cum-container collection drives. These combined public-awareness campaigns with the collection of discarded tyres, containers and other materials that could hold water and support mosquito breeding.

The campaign’s reported coverage extends beyond enforcement and inspection. It places household-level surveillance, waste removal and civic coordination within the same dengue-control operation, while the notices and referrals indicate that action outside TSUISL’s command area remains dependent on the relevant municipal authority.

TSUISL said 21 confirmed dengue cases were reported in East Singhbhum district during the period covered by the drive. Nine of those cases were from its command area. The company said it would continue strengthening dengue-prevention efforts through surveillance, awareness campaigns and source-reduction activities across Jamshedpur.
