Delhi Police have registered an FIR against Congress MPs Imran Masood and Imran Pratapgarhi and others over alleged unauthorised entry into Jamia Millia Islamia and allegedly provoking unrest during an ongoing student protest seeking restoration of the university’s students’ union elections.
The case was registered on the basis of a complaint from the Jamia administration, according to Live Hindustan – NCR. The complaint alleges that the Lok Sabha MP and the Rajya Sabha MP entered the university campus without permission and contributed to unrest during the student agitation.
The protest has been continuing for around two weeks over the demand to restore Jamia’s student union elections, which have remained suspended since 2006. Four students have been on hunger strike for 14 days, according to the report.
Tensions escalated again on Sunday evening near Gate 7, where more than half a dozen people participating in the demonstration were removed by police and security personnel at around 4 pm. The protesters included students associated with AISA, NSUI and other Left student organisations.
The university administration has also alleged that some students pushed security guards and teachers after a two-hour discussion failed to resolve the protest. On Saturday, Vice-Chancellor Mazhar Asif and Registrar Mohammad Mehtab Alam Rizvi, along with more than 1,500 employees, marched towards Gate 7 in an effort to persuade the protesters to end the agitation.
The security deployment around the campus has since been strengthened. Delhi Police and central security personnel have been stationed near the university, its major gates and adjoining roads. Students continued raising slogans and demonstrating inside the campus late into the night, while security forces maintained a presence outside.
The episode has also produced conflicting accounts of events. Protesters handed over a person to police after alleging that he had entered the campus wearing a university security guard’s uniform. Separately, the Students’ Federation of India accused the administration of dragging female students, removing protest tents and allowing police to detain several students near Gate 7. These allegations were reported as claims by the organisation and were not independently established in the supplied report.
The FIR does not determine guilt, and the allegations against the MPs and other individuals will be subject to investigation. Police are continuing to examine the complaint while security remains deployed around the campus. The immediate next steps will depend on the investigation and on further discussions between the university administration and protesting students over the demand for the restoration of student union elections.
