Delhi Police Arrest Two in Fake KYC Credit Card Fraud Case

Delhi Police have arrested two men accused of being part of a cyber-fraud gang that allegedly cheated more than 50 people by posing as bank officials and using screen-sharing calls to conduct fake KYC procedures, officials said.

The accused were identified as Aftab Ansari, 24, and Abdul Majid, 23, both from Jamtara district in Jharkhand. The arrests followed a four-day operation by the Cyber Police Station in Shahdara. Police said three mobile phones containing relevant WhatsApp chats were seized from the suspects.

The case was registered on September 23 after Taranjeet Singh filed a complaint alleging that fraudsters contacted him through phone calls and WhatsApp while claiming to be HDFC Bank officials. They offered to help him update his KYC details and allegedly persuaded him to share his credit card information.

During the investigation, police found that a Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra priced at Rs 1,39,999 had been purchased on JioMart using a disputed credit card transaction. The phone was delivered in Jharia, in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad district. Police said technical information obtained from service providers helped them trace the delivery location.

Investigators then planned a trap with the assistance of the delivery agent. A false delivery involving a mobile phone was arranged in an area previously used by the suspects. The two accused allegedly arrived to collect the package and were arrested, police said.

According to the police, the gang and its associates used Facebook posts to offer assistance with credit card KYC updates. They collected personal information through online forms before contacting potential victims. The suspects allegedly focused on people above the age of 50 and persuaded them to display their credit card details during video calls.

Police said the video calls enabled the accused to view victims’ one-time passwords and use the information to carry out unauthorised transactions. The investigation is continuing to establish the role of other alleged accomplices and examine the data recovered from the seized phones.
