In a significant administrative development, the Maharashtra Government has announced the appointment of Iqbal Singh Chahal as the new Additional Chief Secretary in charge of the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, replacing Bhushan Gagrani.
This decision comes in the wake of a directive issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI) instructing the state government to appoint Gagrani as the new BMC commissioner. The ECI’s directive, which was issued following the announcement of the Lok Sabha poll schedule in March, mandated the transfer of Chahal, along with other civic commissioners and additional or deputy municipal commissioners, who had served in their positions for more than three years.
Chahal’s appointment to the key position in the Chief Minister’s Secretariat underscores a significant reshuffling within the state administration, with Gagrani appointed as BMC commissioner. The move comes amidst a backdrop of heightened political activity and strategic manoeuvring ahead of upcoming elections. As the state government navigates through these transitions, the appointment of Chahal signals a fresh chapter in governance, with a focus on efficient coordination and effective administration. His experience and expertise are expected to play a pivotal role in steering the Chief Minister’s Secretariat towards its objectives, while Gagrani’s transition to the BMC commissioner position underscores the government’s commitment to adhering to the directives of the Election Commission.
