IndiGo Fuel Charges Rise, Pushing Domestic Fares Higher

IndiGo has raised fuel charges on domestic and international flights in response to higher and volatile Aviation Turbine Fuel prices, with the revised charges applying to all new bookings made from 12.01am on October 6, 2026. The increase will add between Rs 100 and Rs 350 per sector to the airline’s domestic fuel component, depending on the flight distance.

Under the revised domestic structure, passengers will pay a fuel charge of Rs 375 for flights up to 500km, Rs 600 for flights between 501km and 1,000km, Rs 900 for flights between 1,001km and 1,500km, Rs 1,150 for flights between 1,501km and 2,000km, and Rs 1,300 for flights exceeding 2,000km.

The earlier charges for the same five distance slabs were Rs 275, Rs 400, Rs 600, Rs 800 and Rs 950 respectively. The new structure therefore raises the domestic charge by Rs 100 on the shortest routes and by up to Rs 350 on flights longer than 2,000km.

For international flights, IndiGo will levy a fuel charge of Rs 1,000 for SAARC destinations up to 500km and Rs 3,000 for journeys beyond 500km. Flights to Southeast Asia, the Gulf Cooperation Council and the Middle East, and North and East Asia will attract a charge of Rs 5,500. The charge for Africa will be Rs 6,000, while the fuel charge for Europe will remain at Rs 10,000.

The airline said the revision was necessary because of the impact of higher fuel costs on its operations and network economics. It cited a month-on-month increase of more than 14% in ATF prices and said jet fuel costs had risen to among their highest levels in the past decade. IndiGo also linked the recent volatility to geopolitical developments in the Middle East.

Aviation Turbine Fuel is a significant component of airline operating costs, leaving carriers exposed to sudden price movements. The revised charges represent a direct mechanism for passing part of that cost pressure on to passengers booking after the new rates take effect. The final fare paid by a passenger will also depend on the base fare, taxes, route, booking timing and other applicable charges.

IndiGo introduced fuel charges in March after a sharp increase in jet fuel prices and recalibrated them in April. The latest revision covers both domestic and international travel, with the largest domestic increase applying to routes longer than 2,000km. For passengers travelling between major Indian cities, the change will raise the fuel component of newly booked tickets from October 6.
