India’s power sector witnessed a notable uptick in April 2024, with power consumption surging approximately 11% to reach 144.25 billion units (BU) compared to the corresponding period last year.
This substantial increase, as highlighted by government data, can be attributed primarily to rising temperatures across the country, prompting heightened demand for electricity to meet cooling and industrial requirements. Notably, the peak power demand, indicative of the highest supply in a day, also experienced a notable rise, reaching 224.18 GW in April 2024 compared to 215.88 GW in April 2023. This upward trajectory underscores the growing energy needs of India’s burgeoning population and expanding industrial landscape. The power ministry’s projection of around 260 GW of peak demand during the summer months underscores the anticipated strain on the country’s power infrastructure. With temperatures expected to soar further in the coming months, coupled with increased industrial activities, the demand for power is poised for robust growth.
Experts attribute the surge in power consumption and demand to multiple factors, including the relentless heatwave gripping many parts of the country and heightened industrial activities, particularly in sectors like steel and power. The confluence of these factors underscores the critical role of electricity in sustaining economic activities and meeting essential needs during periods of heightened demand. While the onset of summer typically heralds a surge in power consumption, historical data indicates fluctuations in demand patterns influenced by climatic conditions and industrial dynamics. The power ministry’s previous estimations for electricity demand during the summer months have occasionally been impacted by unforeseen factors such as unseasonal rainfall, as witnessed in April-July 2023.

Industry experts anticipate sustained momentum in power consumption, particularly during the summer months, driven by climatic factors and industrial resurgence post-pandemic.
