IKEA Bengaluru Store Opens Near Metro as City Expansion Accelerates

IKEA Bengaluru store expansion will enter a new phase on November 5, when the Swedish furniture retailer opens its second outlet in the city at Konanakunte Cross, targeting shorter customer journeys through a smaller urban format and direct access to public transport.

The 80,000-square-foot store at Purva Zentech on Kanakapura Main Road will stock more than 5,200 products. Customers will also be able to order from IKEA’s complete range of over 7,000 products. The outlet is within walking distance of Konanakunte Cross Metro station, placing the store close to a major public-transport link in south Bengaluru.

The opening follows IKEA’s online launch in Bengaluru in 2021 and its effort to deepen its presence in markets where it already has customer recognition. Adosh Sharma, Chief Commercial and Operations Officer, IKEA India, said the company had seen a large customer turnout familiar with the brand. He added that brand recall in south Bengaluru was around 90 per cent, helping IKEA identify the product categories most in demand.

The company’s new format reflects a move towards city stores that can display a broader selection while remaining smaller than conventional large-format outlets. IKEA is winding down its Whitefield plan-and-order point, which was described as a test format. Pooja Grover, Country Expansion Manager, IKEA India, said the limited space at the Whitefield location restricted the company’s ability to showcase its range.

The shift is also connected to IKEA’s stated accessibility target. “Our ambition is to have people reach us either one click online or 30 minutes away physically,” Grover said. The model combines online ordering with stores located closer to established urban neighbourhoods and transport infrastructure. For Bengaluru, the Konanakunte Cross location places the new outlet on a busy south Bengaluru corridor and near a metro station.

IKEA is targeting 30 stores across India by 2030 and aims to quadruple its sales over the same period. The company is evaluating Coimbatore, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Jaipur and Chandigarh for the next phase of its expansion, while also seeking deeper penetration in existing markets.

The expansion is being pursued despite continuing losses in India. IKEA reported revenue of ₹1,749.5 crore in FY25 and a net loss of more than ₹1,300 crore. Its immediate priority remains market penetration, with investments directed towards stores, distribution centres and delivery infrastructure. The company expects online sales to contribute about 25 to 30 per cent of its business, while physical stores remain central to its strategy.

The Bengaluru opening will therefore test whether a smaller, metro-connected store can deliver a wider product experience while supporting IKEA’s broader plan to increase urban reach. The company’s next stated milestones are the November 5 opening and its ongoing evaluation of additional Indian cities.
