Hyundai Pune Plant Expansion to Create a Bigger Auto Hub by 2030

Hyundai Motor India will invest Rs 11,000 crore in phases to expand its Pune manufacturing facility, taking annual vehicle capacity at the plant from 170,000 units to 320,000 by 2030, managing director and CEO Tarun Garg said at the inauguration of the facility.

The investment will expand manufacturing operations and support what the company described as industrial development, innovation and employment generation in the region. The announcement places Pune at the centre of Hyundai’s next phase of capacity growth in India, alongside its existing operations in Chennai.

The Pune plant also houses an engine shop with annual production capacity of 150,000 engines. Hyundai said the facility uses advanced manufacturing technologies to support vehicle production. The planned expansion will be carried out in phases, although the company has not provided a project-wise investment schedule or a detailed construction timeline in the announcement.

The investment follows Hyundai’s earlier announcement of a $15.5 billion commitment to India’s automotive sector over seven years. That broader strategy includes manufacturing expansion, research and development infrastructure, local supplier development for parts localisation and future technology innovation.

Once the Pune and Chennai operations reach their planned capacities, Hyundai Motor India’s total annual manufacturing capacity will be nearly 1.14 million units by 2030. The company did not provide a separate breakdown of how the combined capacity will be distributed across vehicle models or plants beyond the Pune increase announced by Garg.

The expansion also comes as Hyundai highlights India’s role in its global manufacturing and export network. Executive Chair Euisun Chung said the company had reached 4 million cumulative passenger-vehicle exports from India since 1999, describing the milestone as evidence of the competitiveness of Indian manufacturing and India’s growing role within Hyundai Motor Group’s worldwide operations.

For Pune’s industrial economy, the facility’s expansion will extend the importance of automotive manufacturing beyond the plant boundary. Higher vehicle capacity and the planned focus on local supplier cultivation could affect the demand for components, engineering services and manufacturing support. The supplied announcement, however, does not specify the number of new jobs, suppliers or additional land and infrastructure requirements linked to the Rs 11,000 crore investment.

The announcement was made on Wednesday, the same day Hyundai Motor India shares closed almost flat at Rs 1,967 per scrip. The company is expected to implement the investment in phases as part of its seven-year India strategy, with the Pune capacity target set for 2030.
