Urban water managers say the trend reflects growing pressure on local groundwater resources despite continued dependence on surface water supplied from river-based projects.

According to officials, monthly tanker bookings have climbed from roughly 40,000 to more than one lakh, indicating that an increasing number of households and establishments are relying on supplementary water sources. The sharp rise comes as groundwater levels continue to decline in several parts of the city, raising concerns about the sustainability of current water consumption patterns. Experts note that while Hyderabad receives treated drinking water through major river-linked supply systems, expanding urbanisation and population growth will place additional pressure on existing infrastructure. They argue that future resilience cannot rely solely on expanding water supply projects but must also include measures to replenish groundwater naturally through decentralised conservation practices. Hyderabad experiences rainfall over a relatively limited number of days each year, making effective rainwater capture increasingly important in the face of climate variability. Urban planners emphasise that integrating recharge structures into residential developments can improve water resilience while reducing pressure on municipal supply systems. Officials highlighted examples where residential communities equipped with properly maintained rainwater harvesting infrastructure have substantially lowered their reliance on tanker deliveries and reduced overall water costs. Technical guidance is also being offered through partnerships with voluntary organisations to help residents design recharge pits, injection borewells and other groundwater restoration systems suited to local conditions. Beyond household initiatives, authorities are expanding efforts to combine flood mitigation with groundwater conservation. Pilot recharge wells constructed at waterlogging-prone locations are designed to channel stormwater underground instead of allowing it to accumulate on roads.
