HYDERABAD: Hyderabad Customs is preparing to expand its cargo handling network with new Inland Container Depots (ICDs) as part of broader efforts to improve freight movement, reduce congestion and strengthen the city’s position as a growing logistics and trade hub. The proposed infrastructure expansion comes alongside discussions on customs reforms aimed at improving trade efficiency and supporting faster cargo clearance.
The plans were outlined during an industry interaction on reforms introduced through the Union Budget 2026, where government officials and trade stakeholders reviewed measures designed to simplify customs processes and improve the ease of doing business. Participants also shared recommendations on improving operational efficiency across the region’s cargo ecosystem. Officials reported strong growth in customs revenue over the past financial year, reflecting increased trade activity passing through Hyderabad’s logistics network. Collections during the opening quarter of the current financial year also recorded substantial growth, indicating sustained momentum in cargo movement and import-export operations. The proposed Hyderabad Customs ICDs are expected to complement the city’s existing logistics infrastructure, which currently includes operations at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, the Air Cargo Complex, Inland Container Depots and Container Freight Stations. By increasing cargo handling capacity, the additional facilities are intended to reduce operational bottlenecks while supporting higher freight volumes generated by expanding industrial and commercial activity.
Logistics experts believe that strategically located ICDs play an important role in decentralising cargo processing by shifting customs clearance closer to manufacturing and warehousing centres. This approach can reduce congestion at major gateways, shorten cargo dwell times and improve supply chain efficiency for exporters and importers. Officials also indicated that specialised logistics facilities catering to specific product categories are under consideration. Industry analysts say product-focused ICDs and Air Freight Stations could streamline inspection and clearance procedures for sectors such as pharmaceuticals, engineering goods, electronics and perishables, where speed and regulatory compliance are critical to maintaining competitiveness. The expansion aligns with Hyderabad’s emergence as a major manufacturing, life sciences and technology centre, where reliable logistics infrastructure is increasingly important for attracting investment and supporting export-led growth. Improved cargo connectivity can also strengthen regional supply chains by linking producers more efficiently with domestic and international markets.
Infrastructure specialists note that logistics investments should be integrated with multimodal transport planning, sustainable warehousing practices and digital customs systems to ensure long-term efficiency while minimising environmental impacts associated with freight movement. As trade volumes continue to rise, the development of Hyderabad Customs ICDs is expected to improve cargo handling capacity and reinforce the city’s logistics ecosystem.
