Hyderabad Water Supply Board Plans to Clear Tanker Booking Delays

The Hyderabad Metro Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has initiated measures to address the mounting backlog of pending water tanker requests across various parts of the city.

In response to the increased demand for tanker services, particularly during the festive season, the HMWSSB has decided to extend working hours for its staff to expedite the clearance of these pending bookings. The move comes after a considerable rise in unfulfilled tanker requests, which were exacerbated by extended holidays and festivals that disrupted normal service operations. The backlog has affected several regions, including Sheikhpet, Shapurnagar, Budvel, and Asifnagar. Although new bookings have remained relatively stable, the absence of tanker drivers due to vacations has led to a sharp increase in the number of pending requests. Reports indicate that over 100 requests remain unfulfilled in areas like NTR Nagar, Bhavani Nagar, and Chilakalguda, further straining the already stretched water supply system.

During a recent meeting with senior officials, it was acknowledged that while the increase in new bookings had been minimal, the disruption caused by driver absenteeism during the holidays had created a ripple effect on service delivery, particularly in high-demand areas. As a result, the Board has opted to implement extended working hours to address the backlog and ensure uninterrupted water supply to residents, particularly those in need. This situation underscores the growing challenges Hyderabad faces in managing water distribution effectively. Areas that already struggled with irregular water supply are now further impacted by delays in water tanker services. For many residents, especially those in areas with inadequate piped water connections, tankers are a vital source of water. These delays not only disrupt daily life but also add an additional burden on communities that are already dependent on tanker services to meet their basic water needs. In response to these concerns, the HMWSSB has emphasised the need for better operational efficiency during peak times, especially when public holidays and festive seasons coincide.

Moving forward, the Board has committed to improving its coordination and planning to reduce disruptions during busy periods and ensure more reliable water delivery. While extending working hours will offer temporary relief to clear the backlog, it raises questions about the long-term sustainability of Hyderabad’s water supply infrastructure, especially in densely populated areas. While this short-term solution may address the immediate issue, the broader challenge of the city’s water infrastructure and its ability to meet growing demands remains a critical concern. There is an urgent need for a more comprehensive approach to water distribution, including expanding the coverage of piped water connections and reducing the city’s reliance on tanker services.Hyderabad’s rapid urbanisation, coupled with frequent water shortages, presents an ongoing challenge for local authorities. While the temporary extension of working hours may help alleviate the current backlog, the city’s long-term water supply solutions will require significant investment in infrastructure, better resource management, and a focus on ensuring equitable water distribution across all parts of the city.
