Hyderabad Water Pipeline Repairs Near Completion

Hyderabad: Repair work on a major drinking water transmission pipeline at Uppal has entered its final stage, with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) stating that restoration activities are progressing according to schedule. The project is expected to help restore water supply to affected neighbourhoods while reinforcing the resilience of one of the city’s key bulk water distribution networks.

The ongoing work involves repairs to a 1,600-mm mild steel gravity main forming part of Phase II of the Krishna Drinking Water Supply Project. Engineering teams have been working around the clock to complete structural repairs before initiating pipeline restoration and controlled refilling of the network. According to officials, junction works on both sides of the transmission main are nearing completion. Once these activities are finished, engineers will begin restoring the pipeline and gradually refill the system to ensure stable pressure before normal water distribution resumes. The project also includes the installation of seven 300-mm sluice valves designed to improve operational flexibility and maintenance efficiency within the network. Most of the planned valve installations have already been completed, while work on the remaining unit is continuing alongside repairs to a damaged air valve extension pipe near Uppal Stadium.

Water infrastructure experts note that periodic maintenance of trunk pipelines is essential for ensuring reliable urban water services, particularly in rapidly expanding metropolitan areas. Large transmission mains carry substantial volumes of treated drinking water across the city, making preventive maintenance and timely repairs critical to reducing service disruptions and preventing larger infrastructure failures. Officials overseeing the project have directed engineering teams to maintain close coordination so that repair activities remain within the scheduled timeline. Once technical inspections confirm the integrity of the repaired pipeline, treated water will be released into the network in a phased manner to minimise pressure fluctuations and ensure safe restoration of supply. Hyderabad’s growing population and expanding urban footprint continue to place increasing demand on its water infrastructure. As a result, utilities are investing not only in new supply projects but also in maintaining ageing transmission assets that form the backbone of the city’s drinking water system.

Urban planners believe that strengthening critical water infrastructure through timely maintenance, modern monitoring systems and preventive asset management will become increasingly important as climate variability and rising urban demand place greater pressure on municipal water networks. Reliable bulk transmission systems remain central to ensuring uninterrupted access to safe drinking water while supporting Hyderabad’s long-term urban resilience.
