HYDERABAD: Telangana is moving towards a more integrated public transport system by exploring a common ticketing platform that would allow commuters to travel seamlessly across Hyderabad Metro Rail and Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) bus services. The proposal forms part of broader efforts to improve urban mobility, encourage public transport usage and simplify daily commuting across the metropolitan region.
The proposal was reviewed during a meeting of the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) Board, where officials discussed measures to strengthen coordination between different modes of public transport. The initiative reflects a growing emphasis on creating a unified transport ecosystem capable of supporting Hyderabad’s expanding population and rising travel demand. Under the proposal, authorities will examine the feasibility of introducing a Hyderabad common mobility ticket that can be used across Metro and state-run bus services. Officials have also been asked to explore the development of a shared mobile application that would enable commuters to access transport services through a single digital platform. Urban mobility experts say integrated ticketing has become a key feature of modern public transport systems because it reduces barriers between different modes of travel. A single payment system enables passengers to transfer more easily between buses and rail services, improving convenience while encouraging greater reliance on public transport instead of private vehicles.
The government is also evaluating flexible fare products, including daily, weekly and monthly travel passes. Transport economists believe such options can make regular commuting more affordable while increasing ridership, particularly among office workers, students and frequent travellers. During the meeting, officials reviewed progress on the expansion of Hyderabad’s Metro network, including developments related to the transfer of the existing Metro system, land acquisition and utility relocation for upcoming corridors. Additional Metro coaches are also being considered to improve passenger capacity and reduce crowding as demand for urban rail services continues to grow. Experts note that ticket integration alone will not achieve significant modal shifts unless supported by better first- and last-mile connectivity, coordinated schedules and improved interchange facilities between buses, Metro services and suburban rail.
