Hyderabad to Get Double-Decker Infrastructure Boost

Hyderabad Airport Metro Ltd (HAML) and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have initiated the feasibility study for a 1.2 km double-decker flyover cum metro viaduct at Madinaguda (Gangaram). This innovative project comes in response to the area’s constrained road space, complicated further by numerous underground and overhead utilities and a religious site flanking the roadway.

The NHAI had previously planned a flyover along this stretch. With the inclusion of HAML in the project, a comprehensive cross-sectional drawing featuring the highway at the lower level and the metro viaduct above will be prepared and submitted for approval. This collaborative effort is designed to optimise space usage and streamline traffic flow in the densely populated area. Prior to the announcement, officials conducted extensive inspections of key metro corridors, including the Miyapur-Patancheru and LB Nagar-Hayatnagar Phase-II lines, along with the Mailardevpally-Aramghar-New High Court spur line, which is aligned along the National Highway. These inspections were aimed at identifying and addressing engineering challenges posed by these extensive infrastructure projects.

The Miyapur-Patancheru corridor, extending approximately 13 km, will primarily feature a viaduct in the central median of the National Highway, except at BHEL Junction. Here, the metro alignment will shift to the left to integrate the proposed BHEL metro station with the TGSRTC bus stop, enhancing commuter convenience and transit efficiency.

Similarly, the seven-kilometre LB Nagar-Hayatnagar metro corridor will extend from the existing metro viaduct at LB Nagar Junction, positioned between two existing flyovers managed by the GHMC. The alignment will continue along the central median up to the proposed Chintalkunta metro station, facilitating seamless transit and improved accessibility for passengers.

For the Mailardevpally-New High Court spur line, spanning over five kilometres, the metro alignment will commence on the left side of the PVNR Expressway at Aramghar. It will then shift to the right (Agriculture University side) at a strategically chosen point between the PVNR Expressway and the Agriculture University flyover, optimising route efficiency and reducing travel times. This ambitious infrastructure initiative underscores the Telangana government’s commitment to urban development and enhanced public transportation. By integrating various urban development bodies such as the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), Hyderabad Water Works, and Municipal departments, the project aims to foster a synergistic approach to urban management and disaster response.

Chief Minister has emphasised the need for regular interdepartmental coordination to ensure the success of these projects. Special budgetary allocations may be considered to bolster the capabilities of the nascent HYDRA body, which will oversee these developments and ensure effective urban governance. The leadership structure for HYDRA includes a DIG-rank officer as the director, supported by SP-rank officials as additional directors. These roles will be complemented by dedicated teams from GHMC, HMDA, Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB), and other relevant departments. HYDRA’s responsibilities will encompass disaster response, protection of lakes, ponds, water bodies, and government lands, as well as managing emergencies related to essential utilities and traffic regulation.
