Hyderabad Tellapur Traffic Changes Begin For Drain Work
HYDERABAD: Traffic movement around SBI Tellapur on the Nallagandla–Tellapur Road is set for temporary changes as authorities make space for a stormwater drainage project. The restrictions, beginning August 22, are linked to construction of an RCC pipeline along a roughly 300-metre section, where recurring waterlogging has become a concern during intense rainfall.
The drainage work covers the stretch between SBI Tellapur and MM Wine Mart in Tellapur Ward 263. One side of the road will be closed while construction progresses, with vehicles moving in both directions through the remaining available carriageway between the SBI and MM Wines U-turns. The intervention highlights a growing infrastructure challenge in Hyderabad’s expanding western suburbs. Rapid construction has increased pressure on existing roads and drainage networks, while intense monsoon rainfall can expose weaknesses in stormwater systems. Improving underground drainage capacity is therefore closely linked to road reliability and urban resilience. For commuters travelling from Nallagandla towards Tellapur, Osman Nagar and ORR Exit-2, movement through the work zone is expected to slow. Vehicles heading towards Kollur and Osman Nagar will also be managed through the available portion of the road.
Traffic authorities have identified longer alternatives for some journeys. Vehicles travelling towards Osman Nagar and Kollur can use the Neo Mall, Gopanpally X Road and Aliens Junction route before connecting with the ORR service road. These diversions could add travel time, particularly during peak periods when surrounding roads already experience significant demand. Commuters travelling from Tellapur towards RC Puram are being directed through Saibaba Temple, the railway underbridge and Old MIG. Vehicles moving from Kollur and Osman Nagar towards Gachibowli will have another alternative through Aliens Junction, My Home Sayuk, Gopanpally Junction, Gowlidoddy, Wipro Circle and IIT Junction before reaching Gachibowli. The temporary disruption also illustrates why drainage projects need to be coordinated closely with traffic planning. Poorly managed construction can create secondary bottlenecks, particularly on roads serving fast-growing residential and employment districts. Clear signage, pedestrian protection and active traffic management will be important while the work is underway.
From a longer-term perspective, the project addresses more than a seasonal traffic inconvenience. Stormwater infrastructure that reduces flood risk can protect roads, properties and local economic activity during extreme rainfall. It also offers an opportunity to integrate drainage upgrades with future road improvements rather than treating the two systems separately. The immediate priority for motorists will be choosing routes according to their destination and allowing additional travel time. For planners, the larger task is ensuring that drainage capacity keeps pace with development so that recurring waterlogging does not continue to undermine mobility across Hyderabad’s growing western corridor.
