Hyderabad Telangana Protected Land Exercise Nears Final Stage
Hyderabad: Telangana’s ongoing effort to strengthen land governance has reached a critical stage, with most government departments submitting updated property records for inclusion under the state’s prohibited land registry. However, the Telangana Waqf land records update remains pending, delaying the completion of a wider exercise intended to safeguard public and institutional properties from unauthorised transactions.
The state is consolidating land ownership data from departments including revenue, forests and endowments to strengthen protections under Section 22-A of the Registration Act, which restricts the registration of notified public and institutional lands. Officials view the initiative as an important step towards improving land administration, reducing ownership disputes and enhancing transparency in property transactions. According to officials associated with the exercise, nearly one crore acres of government and institutional land have already been identified for protection through the prohibited properties framework. The remaining task involves integrating updated records relating to waqf properties after ongoing verification and digital corrections are completed. Officials from the Telangana Waqf Board indicated that the delay is linked to the process of updating property details on the Centre’s digital land management platform. The exercise includes verification of ownership records, incorporation of revised property information and reconciliation of court orders before the updated database is submitted to the registration and revenue authorities.
Land governance experts note that accurate Telangana Waqf land records are essential for protecting institutional assets from encroachments, unauthorised registrations and prolonged legal disputes. As urbanisation accelerates across Hyderabad and surrounding districts, increasing land values have intensified the need for reliable digital records that clearly establish ownership and legal status. Urban governance analysts believe digital integration of institutional land records with registration systems can significantly reduce fraudulent transactions and improve administrative efficiency. However, they emphasise that regular updates, inter-departmental coordination and transparent public records will be equally important to maintain the integrity of land management systems.
