HYDRAA Disaster Response Force teams cleared waterlogging, choked drains and fallen trees across Hyderabad after heavy rain disrupted parts of the city during office closing hours on Tuesday evening, according to a press statement issued by the agency.
The most significant waterlogging was reported at the Secunderabad Clock Tower RUB underpass, a low-lying location where about one foot of water accumulated. HYDRAA said the underpass does not have adequate stormwater drainage. Teams used 25 HP motors to remove the accumulated water, allowing traffic to continue through the location without disruption.
The response involved station fire officers, Disaster Response Force personnel and monitoring teams. HYDRAA said these teams had been placed on alert and had taken precautionary measures in areas identified as vulnerable to flooding before responding to complaints received during the evening.
The agency’s control room received reports of fallen trees at nine locations and water stagnation at four locations at around 7 pm. HYDRAA said teams cleared all the reported obstructions and removed the accumulated water. The agency did not provide a location-wise list of the affected sites in the statement.
The incident at the Secunderabad Clock Tower underpass highlights the operational difficulty of keeping low-lying road infrastructure usable during intense rainfall. In this case, the response depended on deploying high-capacity pumping equipment at the underpass, while teams simultaneously addressed fallen trees and blocked drainage points elsewhere in the city.
HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath inspected several areas and supervised the removal of stagnant water beneath the Secunderabad Clock Tower bridge. Additional Director Varla Papaiah and divisional forest officers also participated in the inspections, according to the agency.
The episode came as Hyderabad faced heavy rain during a period of peak movement, when office workers and other commuters were leaving for the day. While HYDRAA reported that traffic at the underpass continued after the water was removed, the statement did not specify how long the pumping operation took or whether any roads remained affected after the response.
HYDRAA’s statement focused on emergency clearance and precautionary action. It did not announce a permanent drainage upgrade for the Secunderabad Clock Tower RUB underpass or provide a timeline for addressing the site’s reported drainage inadequacy. Further action at the low-lying location will therefore depend on subsequent decisions by the responsible civic and infrastructure authorities.
